McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts is home to the New Works Project. The Project’s mission is to create, develop and cultivate new musical theatre for the professional stage and offers unique educational opportunities for both writers/composers and performers.
The New Works Project will sponsor “writing teams in residence”. The Conservatory will support these young writers in all phases of developing new works, from concept to stage, with a faculty comprised of both celebrated and emerging composers, lyricists and playwrights. These young writers/artists will be nurtured as they take their ideas from classroom presentations and table readings, to staged readings and workshops, and ultimately, may have the opportunity to present their selected work in a “page to stage” production as part of the McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts main stage season.
The MRCA will also provide a “workshop home” for professional writers to work on their new works at any stage of development utilizing the talents of the Broadway-U performers. This gives the MRCA students the unique opportunity of working on new material, pre-Broadway, with some of the industries’ leading and emerging composers, playwrights and lyricists.
At MRCA, all of the New Works Project team members will have the opportunity to develop the professional connections they will need to cultivate their work. Selected new works by MRCA New Works Project students will be given staged readings for industry professionals at The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and at The New World Stages, a premiere Off-Broadway theatre, in New York City.
